Arigay Ramaswamy Biography
Arige Ramaswamy was born in 1895, in Secunderabad, Telangana in India. Arige Ramaswamy was a noted social activist and Dalit leader. He worked with Bhagya Reddy Verma, S. Venkat Rao and other activists, who organized the Dalits in the early 20th century. Recognising the backwardness of the Madiga, he formed the Arundhatiya Association for their welfare.
Ramaswamy married a Madiga boy with a Mala girl, which was opposed by the community members. he established adhi hindhu jathoyonnathi sabha in 1922.
Bhagya Reddy Varma, Arigay Ramaswamy and B.S. Venkat Rao laid foundation for Dalit Movements in Hyderabad State. Though Bhagya Reddy Varma was more popular among the three, he looked down Madigas. He was against inter-caste marriages of Mala and Madigas. Arigay Ramaswamy, thought he belonged to the Mala community like Bhagya Reddy Varma, he wanted to give equal support to Madigas also. Arigay Ramaswamy encouraged inter-caste marriages of Malas and Madigas.
In 1931 C.E., for the uplift of Madigas, Arigay Ramaswamy founded ‘Arundhathiyar Mahasabha’. In the early 1920’s Arigay Ramaswamy and Bhagya Reddy Varma differed on many issues. Many times Bhagya Reddy Varma encouraged assaults on Arigay Ramaswamy. P.R., Venkata Swamy, the historians who recorded the Dalit Movements of Hyderabad States gave details about their individual contributions and mutual conflicts.
